What is lightning?
Lightning is a bright flash of electricity produced by a thunderstorm.
What causes lightning?
Lightning is an electric current. Within a thundercloud way up in the sky, many small bits of ice (frozen raindrops) bump into each other as they move around in the air. All of those collisions create an electric charge. After a while, the whole cloud fills up with electrical charges. The positive charges or protons form at the top of the cloud and the negative charges or electrons form at the bottom of the cloud. Since opposites attract, that causes a positive charge to build up on the ground beneath the cloud. The grounds electrical charge concentrates around anything that sticks up, such as mountains, people, or single trees. The charge coming up from these points eventually connects with a charge reaching down from the clouds and – zap – lightning strikes!

Water Safety & Swim Training
We have been learning water safety skills and practicing our swimming at the Llyod Elsmore Pools every Thursday. We practice getting into and out of the pool, rope rescues, kick board rescues and how to get in and out of the boat.
We pretended that we had fallen out of a boat. We had to go under the boat and then swim to safety.

ITM 500 V8 SuperCars in Pukekohe By Natasha
Last Friday Nicola, Elly and Naki took us to the ITM 500 V8 SuperCars in Pukekohe to watch the racing. We were trying to look all around for a parking and we finally found one.
I saw lots of racing cars going very fast around the track. There were also lots of other schools there.
We walked through a noisy bridge over the track to where the cars were in the pits getting work done to them. I thought it was cool when we got some good photos of the racing cars up close. We saw lots of T.V cameras filming the racing cars getting different work done.
We sat in one of the stands and watched the racing. We saw a safety car going around the track with its lights and sirens on.
After that we saw some more different cars, a fire engine, ambulance and some trucks. We watched a cool performance from Star Jam.
I got a sticker and a V8s poster. It was my first time going to the V8 SuperCars and it was really cool.

Bradley’s ITM 500 V8 Supercars Report 2015.
Last Friday, we went to the ITM 500 Racetrack in Pukekohe to see the V8 Supercars. It was a really sunny day, and there were a lot of racecars racing on the track. Personally, I thought the cars were really loud because of the engines they ran on.
While we were at the racetrack, we walked around the pit stops where the cars entered. Some of the pit stops looked a bit like flats and were a bit comfy, but at the same time the pit crews got into action when the racecars entered their garage. As soon as the crews started working on the cars, they changed the tyres, hydraulics and even filled up the fuel tanks to the brim.
The supercars weren’t the only vehicles we saw at the racetrack, as there were also a couple of races involving sports utes too. Unlike the supercars, the utes weren’t as noisy, but they were still pretty fast.
Overall, it was a very awesome day out, and we got to take a couple of souvenirs home. The souvenirs were a big poster and a sticker. It was really good of our teacher to take us out on a special trip like this because it will probably be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the drivers up close.
